The East Palace Ending Explained: Who Is the Pond Spirit and Does Gu-cheon Leave the Palace?

by finditnote 2026. 8. 13.

The East Palace is a Korean supernatural historical drama about Gu-cheon, a man who can enter the spirit realm, and Saeng-gang, a court lady who can hear the dead.

They are summoned to the royal palace after a series of mysterious deaths, but the deeper they investigate, the clearer it becomes that the real horror is not just ghosts — it is the royal family's hunger for power.

SPOILER WARNING: Major spoilers for The East Palace below.

Q1. Does The East Palace Have a Happy Ending?

Mostly, yes — but it is not a completely closed happy ending.

Gu-cheon survives the final battle and returns from the spirit realm.

More importantly, he is finally allowed to leave the palace alive.

That matters because he originally entered the palace against his will under the king's orders.

By the end, he has solved the curse, survived the spirit world, and is finally able to walk away from the palace.

However, the chain mark still remaining on his hand suggests that his connection to the spirit realm may not be completely over.

So I would describe the ending as hopeful but slightly open-ended.

Q2. Who Is the Pond Spirit?

The first pond spirit is the ghost of a royal concubine who was falsely accused by the queen dowager.

She lost her unborn child and died with deep resentment toward the royal family.

Her curse was directed at the royal bloodline.

However, she is not responsible for every royal death in the story.

That becomes one of the drama's biggest twists.

Q3. Who Really Killed the Princes?

The truth goes back decades.

The king's mother, Lady Choi, wanted her own son to become king.

To make that happen, she arranged for the other princes to be poisoned.

She used the existing pond-spirit curse as a convenient explanation for the deaths.

The current king knew what his mother had done but allowed the truth to remain hidden because he wanted the throne.

So the tragedy that appears supernatural at first is actually rooted in murder, ambition, and political power.

Q4. Why Does the Crown Prince Become the New Pond Spirit?

The crown prince discovers how his grandmother once removed rivals to place his father on the throne.

Instead of rejecting that history, he repeats it.

He also tries to eliminate his brothers so that he can become king.

When the king realizes what his son has done, he kills the crown prince himself in an attempt to stop the same cycle from continuing.

But the prince dies with rage and resentment.

After death, he becomes a powerful evil spirit and effectively becomes the new pond spirit.

Q5. Why Does the King Kill His Own Son?

The king realizes that his son is repeating the exact same crimes that once helped him become king.

His own mother killed princes for him.

Now his son is doing the same thing for the throne.

The king decides to stop the cycle himself and kills the crown prince.

It is one of the darkest parts of the story because the king is trying to end a pattern of violence that he himself once benefited from.

Q6. Does Gu-cheon Become an Evil Spirit?

He comes very close.

During the final battle, Gu-cheon makes a deal with an ancient spirit to obtain the power needed to destroy the crown prince's soul.

The price is extremely dangerous.

If he succeeds, he risks becoming an evil spirit himself and remaining trapped in the spirit realm.

Gu-cheon still goes through with it and manages to destroy the crown prince's spirit.

He later returns to the real world, so he does not remain trapped there.

Q7. Does Gu-cheon Survive?

Yes.

Gu-cheon survives the final confrontation and returns to the real world.

He is not simply shown waking up or escaping the spirit realm.

The ending goes one step further: he is finally allowed to leave the palace.

Saeng-gang asks the king to let him go, and the king agrees.

That final departure is important because the palace has been a place of danger, control, and death for Gu-cheon from the beginning.

Leaving it alive feels like his real escape.

Q8. What Does the Chain on Gu-cheon's Hand Mean?

The chain mark suggests that Gu-cheon's connection to the spirit realm has not completely disappeared.

The drama does not fully explain what will happen next.

Because of that, the ending leaves open the possibility that the supernatural world may still be part of Gu-cheon's life.

So even though he survives and leaves the palace, his story does not feel completely finished.

Q9. Is Saeng-gang Really the King's Daughter?

Yes.

Saeng-gang is not simply a court lady.

She is actually the king's daughter, which connects her directly to the royal family's hidden history.

This also gives her role in uncovering the palace's secrets much more personal weight.

Q10. What Is The East Palace Really About?

For me, the main idea is very simple:

The ghosts are frightening, but human ambition is worse.

The royal family's tragedies begin with people killing others for the throne and then hiding those crimes behind supernatural explanations.

The curse matters, but the real source of the horror is the cycle of violence created by people.

That is probably the clearest message the drama leaves behind.

Quick Review

I enjoyed the first half of The East Palace more than the second.

The early episodes had a strong mystery atmosphere, and I liked watching Gu-cheon and Saeng-gang uncover the truth behind the pond spirit and the royal deaths.

The Korean folklore-inspired supernatural world also felt fresh.

Cho Seung-woo and Jang Young-nam were especially impressive, and their scenes involving the royal family's past were some of the strongest parts of the drama.

My biggest problem was the later horror.

The supernatural scenes became much more graphic and intense, and for me they eventually overwhelmed the historical mystery that had made the beginning so interesting.

I also thought Nam Joo-hyuk was fine here despite some criticism of his acting.

And the tiny spirit Kkeomeoksari was easily one of the cutest characters in such a dark drama. 😂

Overall, I liked the worldbuilding and the message, but I wish the balance between historical mystery and horror had remained stronger until the end.

Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
