Boyfriend on Demand follows webtoon producer Seo Mi-rae, who is exhausted by work and no longer has much energy for real-life dating.
Everything changes when she tries a subscription-based virtual dating service that lets her experience different romantic fantasies with a wide range of virtual boyfriends.
But as the service becomes more personal, Mi-rae is forced to confront what she actually wants from love — both inside and outside the virtual world.

Q1. Does Boyfriend on Demand Have a Happy Ending?
Yes. Boyfriend on Demand has a happy ending.
Mi-rae ultimately leaves the virtual dating service behind and chooses to continue her relationship with Park Kyeong-nam in the real world.
The ending is less about rejecting virtual dating completely and more about Mi-rae becoming ready to open herself up to a real relationship again.
Q2. Who Is Gu Yeong-il?
Gu Yeong-il is Mi-rae's custom-made virtual boyfriend.
Instead of choosing from the existing virtual boyfriends available in the service, Mi-rae answers a large number of questions about her preferences.
The system then creates a boyfriend specifically designed for her.
That boyfriend is Gu Yeong-il, the 901st custom-tailored boyfriend.
What shocks Mi-rae is that Gu Yeong-il looks exactly like her real-life coworker Park Kyeong-nam.
Q3. Why Does Gu Yeong-il Look Like Park Kyeong-nam?
The drama does not treat the resemblance as a random coincidence.
Gu Yeong-il is created from Mi-rae's preferences and emotional data, while Kyeong-nam is already becoming increasingly important to her in reality.
So the fact that her supposedly ideal virtual boyfriend has Kyeong-nam's face reflects how much he has already entered her thoughts and feelings.
It is also what makes Mi-rae's virtual and real relationships impossible to keep completely separate.

Yes. Their relationship gradually becomes romantic.
Kyeong-nam starts as Mi-rae's coworker and professional rival, but he has feelings for her and eventually confesses.
Mi-rae also begins to see him differently, and their relationship develops in the real world even while Gu Yeong-il is still part of her virtual life.

Mi-rae and Kyeong-nam are already dating when he discovers the truth about Gu Yeong-il.
As Mi-rae spends less time in the virtual world, Gu Yeong-il keeps contacting her and asking why she has stopped coming to see him.
Kyeong-nam eventually discovers that Mi-rae has been using Boyfriend on Demand and learns that her virtual boyfriend looks exactly like him.
He later enters the virtual world himself and comes face-to-face with Gu Yeong-il.
Q6. Why Does Gu Yeong-il Keep Trying to Hold on to Mi-rae?
Gu Yeong-il was created to be the boyfriend who best matches Mi-rae's emotional needs.
So when she begins pulling away from the virtual world, he does not simply disappear from the story.
He keeps reaching out to her and plays on one of her biggest fears: that a real relationship may hurt her again or leave her alone.
For Mi-rae, staying with Gu Yeong-il would be easier and safer.
But that safety is also what she eventually decides to leave behind.

Yes.
Mi-rae returns to the virtual world and meets Gu Yeong-il one last time.
By then, she understands why the service had become so comforting to her.
Virtual dating allowed her to experience romance again without taking the same emotional risks she feared in real life.
But she ultimately decides that she does not want to stay there forever.
Mi-rae says goodbye to Gu Yeong-il and ends her use of Boyfriend on Demand.
Q8. What Happens to Yoon Song and the Plagiarism Scandal?
Yoon Song gets into trouble after using elements from her virtual boyfriend experience in her webtoon.
Her virtual date is a chef played by Choi Si-won, who cooks food and desserts specifically for her.
When parts of that experience appear in Yoon Song's work, she becomes caught up in a plagiarism controversy. The problem is that even though the virtual date feels like a personal experience to her, the characters and scenarios inside Boyfriend on Demand are still part of a commercial service.
The controversy becomes serious enough to threaten Yoon Song's career, and she initially faces being dropped by her company.
Mi-rae steps in and asks the company to reconsider the decision. In the end, Yoon Song is not completely pushed out. Instead, the situation is softened into a temporary break while the controversy settles down.
So her story does not end with her career being completely ruined. She suffers professional consequences, but the plagiarism issue is largely resolved by the finale.

One of the biggest attractions of Boyfriend on Demand is the huge lineup of virtual boyfriends.
Mi-rae is not the only one who uses the service. Ji-yeon and Yoon Song also experience their own virtual romances, so there are 14 notable virtual boyfriend characters in total.

Q10. What Is the Main Point of the Ending?
The ending is basically about Mi-rae realizing that a relationship does not have to be perfectly designed to be worth experiencing.
Boyfriend on Demand can give her ideal dates, ideal situations, and even a boyfriend built specifically around her preferences.
Real life cannot do that.
Kyeong-nam can misunderstand her, disappoint her, and behave in ways she cannot control.
But Mi-rae eventually decides that she wants to experience that reality rather than remain inside a relationship designed to always feel safe.
That is why leaving Gu Yeong-il matters more than simply choosing one man over another.
Quick Review
I started Boyfriend on Demand because the virtual dating subscription concept sounded genuinely fun, and the special appearance lineup was almost impossible to ignore.
The strongest part of the drama was definitely the virtual dating idea.
Each boyfriend came with a completely different romantic fantasy, so the series could suddenly become a campus romance, medical drama, spy story, or historical romance depending on the episode.
The guest actors were also one of the show's biggest strengths. Personally, Seo Kang-jun was the MVP for me. His first-love college senior character fit him so well that he almost felt like a real second male lead rather than a special appearance.
At the same time, that became a small problem for the drama. The virtual boyfriends were so memorable that Seo In-guk's actual male lead sometimes felt less prominent during the first half.
I preferred Seo In-guk as Park Kyeong-nam much more than as Gu Yeong-il. The styling for virtual Gu Yeong-il felt a little awkward to me, while Kyeong-nam felt much more natural.
Jisoo looked beautiful in the constantly changing virtual worlds, but I still wanted a little more emotional weight from her performance in some of the more serious scenes.
My biggest disappointment was that the second half gradually became a more familiar real-world romance.
The virtual dating concept was fresh enough that I wish the drama had pushed it even further until the end.
Still, it was an easy and entertaining watch, especially if you enjoy seeing different romance fantasies packed into one drama.
